Rice University is the most productive large research university in Texas, according to a ranking based on faculty scholarly productivity.
Rice ranks No. 1 on the list of highest-scoring large research universities in Texas, and it is the only Texas institution to make the top 25 list nationally, where it ranks No. 22.
The rankings were conducted by Academic Analytics, which compared doctoral programs at research universities by measuring the scholarly productivity of faculty based on their book and journal publications, citations of journal articles, federal grants, and awards and honors.
”We are very pleased that this ranking recognizes Rice’s leadership as a research university, and we are grateful also to be one among several outstanding research institutions in Texas,” said Rice University President David Leebron.
To be considered a large research university for Academic Analytics’ Faculty Scholarly Productivity (FSP) Index, an institution must have at least 15 Ph.D. programs across multiple disciplines. Rice’s ranking was based on 27 Ph.D. programs.
The 2005 index compiles overall institutional rankings on 166 large research universities and 61 smaller research universities. The rankings reflect data from nearly 200,000 faculty members based at 354 institutions and representing 118 academic disciplines in nearly 7,300 Ph.D. programs throughout the country. The FSP Index research matched those faculty to more than 15,000 books authored by slightly more than 9,500 faculty, more than one million journal articles, almost seven million citations, more than 6,000 awards and honors and more than 83,000 federal research grants. Statistical algorithms for calculating the 2005 FSP Index used points assigned for the various indications of scholarly productivity.
In addition to Rice, the top 10 large research universities in Texas (in order of ranking) are University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Houston — University Park, University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Texas at Dallas, Texas Tech University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas and Baylor University.
Harvard University topped the national list of large research universities.
