Construction update:
Soccer stadium gets new locker rooms, athletics offices move, Reckling gets new field
RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
Despite June’s steady rain, construction on the Rice campus continues to move forward, though a little slower and definitely soggier than planned. Still, there’s news to report on several construction fronts:
Reckling Park at Cameron Field
Non-baseball action began at Reckling Park July 10. An old parking lot under the baseball field causes poor drainage of the area, so the field is being taken up to allow removal of the concrete/asphalt and replacement of the field.

A new heating and air conditioning system and a state-of-the-art conference room are being installed at Baker College this summer. Work is expected to be completed by the start of O Week in mid-August. |
As part of the project, West Lot 6 will be used for staging and storage of rock, sand and other materials.
Those who park in West Lot 6 should use West Lot 4. Employees who park behind Autry Court and the gymnasium, near the tennis courts, may park at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium lot. West Lot 6 is expected to reopen by Oct. 22.
Soccer stadium
Women’s soccer teams will be a little more comfortable when playing on campus come this fall. That’s because two air-conditioned locker rooms are being built at the track and soccer stadium.
A water-proof design was necessary because the bleachers under which the locker rooms are being built are located in a new 100-year flood plain. Construction of the locker rooms is slated to begin as soon as permits come through.
Athletics offices
Construction on Autry Court required the athletics department offices to move last week. The athletics offices, including the ticket and sports information offices, can now be found in space set up in the east side of Rice Stadium in the former book depository. A few additional sports offices are located in the R room. The ticket office and athletics department offices will move back to Autry Court when that building is finished in approximately 18 months.
McMurtry College and New College #11
Site work for the two new colleges, McMurtry and College #11, will begin in the next two weeks. Soil samples have been taken, the site marked and permits requested in preparation for underground utility work.
Some trees along the Virgin’s Walk will be moved to a holding area and replanted after construction is finished. Some diseased trees will be replaced with healthy ones.
