CORRUL announces fall speaker series

This fall Rice’s Center on Race, Religion and Urban Life (CORRUL) will host two lectures on racial issues past and present as part of their fall 2007 guest speaker series. The events are open to the public.

Charles Gallagher of Georgia State University will discuss “Controlling for Race in a Colorblind World: The Role of Evidence, Sociology and Deep Pockets.,” noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 12, in Sewall Hall, Room 307.  Gallagher’s research focuses on racial and social inequality and the ways in which the media, the state and popular culture constructs, shapes and disseminates ideas of race. He is the author of “Ten Simple Things You Can Do to Improve Race Relations” and “Color-Blind Privilege.”

On Nov. 9, Pulitzer nominee Edward Blum of San Diego State University will discuss “The Spiritual Rage and Vision of W.E.B. Du Bois,” noon to 1 p.m. in Sewall Hall, Room 309. Blum is the author of “Reforging the White Republic,” “W. E. B. Du Bois, American Prophet” and co-editor of “Vale of Tears: New Essays on Religion and Reconstruction.”

CORRUL is dedicated to understanding urban life and improving relationships between racial, ethnic, and religious groups.
