“My God Told Me to Kill Your God” will feature the work of native Houstonian Mel Chin. The first of his Chinese family born in the United States, Chin was raised in a predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhood where he worked in his family’s grocery store and began making art at an early age.
Though he is classically trained, Chin’s art evades easy classification. Alchemy, botany, and ecology all intersect in his work. He attempts to investigate how art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. Examples of his work can be seen at http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/chin_mel.html.
Other artists appearing in the exhibit include Eric Avery, Felipe Contreras, Tim Glover, David Krueger and Ed Wilson. Karin Broker, VADA department chair, and Brian Huberman, associate professor of visual arts, curated the exhibition.
In concert with the art exhibition, VADA will also host a weeklong series of films and lectures.
