Documentary details special Puerto Rican regiment

The Department of Hispanic Studies, in collaboration with the Sociedad de Puertorriqueños en Houston, will screen the documentary “The Borinqueneers” Nov. 17.  The movie was directed by Raquel Ortiz and narrarated by actor Hector Elizondo.

The Borinqueneers, as the 65th Infantry Regiment was nicknamed, was an all-volunteer Puerto Rican unit of the U.S. Army that participated in the world wars and the Korean War. The regiment was deactivated in 1956 and transferred to the Puerto Rican National Guard.

The screening will take place from 6 to 9:30 p.m.in Herring Hall, Room 100. A reception will follow with special guest executive producer Noemí Soulet. Admission is $10 for the public and $5 for veterans and students.
