Almost 1,500 girls attended the Sally Ride Science Festival Oct. 27 at
Rice. The festival was designed to boost middle-school girls’ interest
in science and engineering.

The festival included workshops for girls taught by scientists and
engineers, as well as workshops for parents and teachers about ways to
support girls’ interests in science and math. Former NASA astronaut
Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle mission,
gave the keynote address.

The festival was sponsored by the Rice Space Institute, the Wiess
School of Natural Science, the Brown School of Engineering, the James
A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, and the NASA Immersive Earth
and MMS programs.
