People, Papers and Presentations

“Hurricane Moon,” the first novel by alumna Alexis Latner ’80, was praised recently by the Washington Post as “a compelling work that creates believable worlds informed by hard science but populated with credible characters who aren’t just mouthpieces for technological wizardry.”

Stephen So, graduate student in electrical and computer engineering, won the Best Presentation Award at the first annual Mid-Infrared Technologies for Health and the Environment Summer Workshop, held at Princeton University.

David Worth, lecturer of humanities, presented a paper on “Semiotics of the Trophy Case: The Changing Meaning of Awards” at the National Communication Association Annual Convention in Chicago this month. He presented “Sprawl or Art? Contemporary Lived Space as Efficient Modernity” at the annual meeting of the International Jean Gebser Society in Eau Claire, Wis., in October. Also at the latter meeting, Jeremy Grace, lecturer of humanities, presented his paper, “A Community of Stars: Consciousness as Systematic Anthropomorphism.”

Boyd Beckwith, assistant dean of students, received the Shirley Bird Perry Outstanding Professional Award at the fall conference of Region 12 members of the Association of College Unions International. The award is the highest honor presented by Region 12.

Richard Johnson, director of sustainability, delivered his paper on “Connecting Campus Greening with the Classroom” at the Greening of the Campus VII conference at Ball State University in September.  The paper was also published in the conference proceedings.

“William Bolcom: Complete Works for Cello,” a CD on which two Rice faculty members and an alumna from the Shepherd School of Music perform, received positive reviews on Allmusic.com and Infodad.com. Norman Fischer, professor of cello, Jeanne Kierman, artist teacher of piano, and timpanist Andrea Moore ’93 perform on the CD, which is on the Naxos label.
