Warren named chair of Department of Computer Science

Professor of Computer Science Joe Warren has been named chair of the Department of Computer Science, effective July 1, 2008. He will succeed Keith Cooper, who has been the department chair since July 2002.

Warren joined Rice as an assistant professor in 1986 after earning his Ph.D. and master’s in computer science from Cornell University. He earned bachelor’s degrees with honors from Rice in mathematics, mathematical science and computer science.
 
For more than 20 years, Warren has focused his research and teaching on computer graphics, computer gaming, geometric modeling and visualization. He has affiliations with Rice’s Computer and Information Technology Institute, as well as with the Keck Center for Computational and Structural Biology. Warren is the author of more than 80 papers and reports and is the co-author of “Subdivision Methods for Geometric Design.”

Warren has served on or chaired the department’s graduate, recruiting, faculty recruiting and undergraduate committees. He chairs the space planning committee for the George R. Brown School of Engineering. At the university level, he has been an active member of the Faculty Senate and served on the university committees on computers and on admissions.
