Twelve students from Rice’s forensics society competed in the tournament, which was hosted by Concordia University of Nebraska and Concordia University–Irvine, Calif.
In this national swing competition — two tournaments in one weekend — the contingent from the Rice team placed third among 35 debate teams from 15 universities and colleges.
“Our team is above par,” said David Worth, director of the forensics program. “We have a record number of individuals already qualifying for nationals at this time in the season. This group of students has upped the ante and we are expecting some more big wins.”
In the Concordia tournament, in which more than 500 students competed, Rice students won 17 separate debates and brought home 31 individual awards and four team awards.
Among the teams Rice defeated in the tournament were Creighton University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Wheaton College, Kansas State University, Hastings College and Bethel College.
