Fun run/walk promotes stroke awareness

The Methodist Hospital System’s second annual Stride4Stroke Run and Walk will be held on the Rice campus March 8.

Rice is one of the sponsors of the 5K event, which is held to raise funds and awareness to fight stroke in the greater Houston area. All proceeds will benefit the Methodist Neurological Institute and its stroke outreach education, which serves all Methodist system hospitals.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious long-term disability in the U.S. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 45 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes.  Each year, about 750,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke.
   
Registration before the day of the event is $25. Children under age 12 can participate for free, and strollers and pets are welcome.

Participants may register online before the event at http://methodiststride4stroke.kintera.org.  On-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event by Rice Stadium and will be followed by opening remarks at 8:20 a.m. The run and walk will begin at 9 a.m.

All registered adults and children over age 12 will receive a 2008 Stride4Stroke T-shirt.

After the race, participants and their families are invited to stay for   refreshments, visit children’s activity center and stroke education booths, join in fitness activities, receive massages and stop by sponsor tables.
