The Way I See It: Rice baseball hits a home run for one fan
BY TOMMY LAVERGNE Special to the Rice News I’ve heard it said that it’s the simple things that make life worth living. It’s only natural that we tend to get caught up with the negative things that surround our everyday lives. Family matters, high cost of fuel, political candidates of which none seen worthy and government intervention in the simple game of baseball. It’s also only natural that many folks are beginning to get tired and weary of the impurities surrounding today’s major leagues. There is a solution! Tuesday afternoon, on a beautiful early spring day, our beloved Rice Owls had their home opener. For me, there is not a better day of the year. It beats the craziness surrounding Christmas, beats the work associated with Thanksgiving and beats a birthday by a mile. For those of you in and around the Rice community who have never taken advantage of coming to Reckling Park to cheer on the Owls, you’re cheating yourselves. The game is pure, the boys play hard and Coach Graham — well Coach is always fun to watch. Make a point to come out this year. It truly is a day at the Park. —Tommy LaVergne is the university photographer at Rice. Editor’s note: The Rice Owls baseball team will play in the annual Houston College Classic Tournament Feb. 29-March 2 at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros. The Owls face the University of Oklahoma at noon Friday, the University of Texas at 7 p.m. Saturday and Texas Tech at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at the Minute Maid Park Box Office.
