Rice’s disability claims administrator to change April 1
Beginning April 1, Rice University’s short-term and long-term disability claims administrator will change to Unum.
All new short-term disability leaves of absence that start on or after April 1 will need to be initiated with Unum. All short-term disability leaves initiated prior to April 1 will remain with Sun Life, the university’s current administrator.
Unum will manage all of Rice University’s nonwork-related short-term and long-term disability benefits. Work-related injuries and claims will continue to be administered by Risk Management and Travelers Insurance.
The change in administrators is in response to concerns raised by benefits-eligible faculty and staff about Sun Life. The decision to begin working with Unum was made after a careful review of the services they offer, and the Rice benefits team feels that Unum will better meet the needs of the university.
With Unum, benefits-eligible faculty and staff will receive the same quality benefits they have always expected from Rice University. Only the claims administration vendor will
change.
Claims can be initiated by:
- Phone: 1-888-857-0157, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central time
- Online: www.unum.com/claims
A Unum representative will be assigned each claimant and can answer any questions.
Employees with questions or concerns about the change can contact any member of the benefits team.
