Rice University students involved in the Addressing Current Events in Science (ACES) outreach program make presentations to local high school students on scientific topics.

Led by Will Rice College sophomore Sarah Wu, a group of students from Rice’s Undergraduate Biological Journal Club started ACES as a way to interest local students in the sciences. High school teachers who hosted ACES reported that the presentations were very lively and educational.

“The Rice students were enthusiastic and their talk and questions reinforced so many topics my students and I have discussed earlier,” said Lief Sigren ’96, who teaches biology at East Early College High School (EECHS).

ACES plans to make monthly visits to area schools and has already presented at EECHS and Carnegie Vanguard School. Siva Kumari, adviser to the provost on K-12 initiatives, is assisting the students to arrange visits to more schools.
