Vardi earns recognition for lasting contributions to computer science

Computer Science’s Moshe Vardi has been named this year’s recipient of the SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award. Vardi, the Karen Ostrum George Professor in Computational Engineering and professor of computer science, was chosen for his contributions to the foundations of relational databases by establishing deep connections between database theory, mathematical logic, complexity theory and artificial intelligence.

SIGMOD recognized Vardi for his important contributions to query processing complexity, logics and query languages, connections between databases and other areas of computer science.

The Codd award is presented annually by the Association for Computing Machinery to those who have made ”significant contributions of enduring value to the development, understanding or use of database systems and databases.”

Vardi was also recently awarded the 2008 Blaise Pascal Medal for Computer Science by the European Academy of Sciences. The academy established the medal in 2003 to recognize outstanding contributions to science and technology and the promotion of excellence in research and education. The medal recognizes Vardi’s outstanding contributions in several areas of computer science and the fundamental and lasting impact of his work on automatic verification, logic of knowledge, database theory and finite-model theory.
