Rice University’s Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies and the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of Houston are hosting a Financial Fitness Workshop 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4 on the Rice campus.

The Financial Fitness Workshop is a one-day opportunity for the community to hear from Houston-area certified financial planner professionals who will help them learn to achieve financial success.

This workshop is a prelude to the seventh annual Financial Planning Week, Oct. 6-12. During this special week, the FPA and its nationwide network of chapters have organized events across the country to increase public awareness of the financial planning process to help people make smart financial decisions to achieve their goals and dreams.

The Financial Fitness Workshop aims to educate the public about the value of financial planning. This workshop will provide a wealth of financial knowledge for new or seasoned investors, for those who manage a small portfolio or a large estate or for those who are retired or planning for retirement.

The program includes two featured speakers and four breakout sessions. In each breakout session, attendees will choose between four topics and speakers, each lasting one hour. The topics will include a variety of subjects focusing on retirement, investments, tips and tactics, and lifestyles, such as “Retirement Vehicles: 401(k)s, IRAs and Pensions,” “Annuities: When They’re Right and When They’re Not,” “ID Theft” and “Navigating Social Security and Medicare.” Many of the speakers are from the FPA speakers bureau.

“Financial planning is a process,” said Becky Ruthven, a certified financial planner and planning committee chair for the Financial Fitness Workshop from FPA of Houston. “The objective of this workshop is to educate Houstonians in the areas of financial planning and to help them understand the purpose of looking at the big picture on a regular basis with a financial planner who understands their short- and long-term goals.”

This workshop is made possible with support from its sponsors: Allianz, Houston Advantage Insurance Brokerage Inc., HUB International Personal Insurance Company and Cornerstone Mortgage Company. Representatives from each company will be available to discuss financial options and answer questions.
