Helping employees cope

Free bags of ice, courtesy of Housing and Dining, were just one of the benefits offered to Rice employees, many of whose homes are still without electricity. Knowing that a number of faculty and staff were out of town or dealing with damage from Hurricane Ike, the university did not charge benefit time to employees who were unable to report to campus when Rice reopened Tuesday. Human Resources and other departments sought all types of assistance for employees affected by the storm, from short-term loans and check cashing to meals, child care, shower facilities and laundry services.
