In the spirit of Rice University’s commitment to its home city of Houston, several members of the Rice Public Affairs team rose before dawn Friday, Oct. 31, to help raise money for local National Public Radio affiliate KUHF-FM. With her Rice colleagues manning the phones, Vice President Linda Thrane spent more than an hour on the air, where she and KUHF broadcasters highlighted the importance of public radio and higher education to Houston. Calls came in from Rice and many other colleges and universities, which helped the station raise more than $50,000 in pledges and exceed its $900,000 fundraising goal. This is just one example of the community engagement you’ll find at Rice — from students mentoring high school seniors, working at food banks and cleaning Ike-damaged neighborhoods to faculty members helping the city’s neediest school children improve their writing skills. And that’s how Rice Owls get the worm. |
