This week Rice University’s
recently established sport management program hosted an international
seminar, “Sport and the Community,” which brought in more than a dozen
professionals from Ireland’s and Northern Ireland’s key sporting
organizations, councils and associations. The international visitors
came to Houston to learn more about sport in the United States.

In
conjunction with the Irish Institute at Boston College, Rice’s sport
management program arranged for speakers from Houston sport
organizations to discuss community relations, success with volunteers
and the media. Panelists included a sports reporter from the Houston
Chronicle and vice presidents, managers and directors from the Houston
Astros, the Rockets, the Dynamo, the Livestock Show and Rodeo, Chevron
Houston Marathon, the Texans and Rice Athletics. The seminar concluded with a
tour of Minute Made Park and a discussion with Pam Gardner, president
of the Astros.
