The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is now an in-network option for all Aetna medical plans offered through Rice University, including RiceCare HMO, RiceCare Flexplan (POS) and RiceCare PPO.

This expansion allows Rice faculty and staff more flexibility in choosing plans for the next open enrollment for benefits, which will begin April 13. New coverage elections will be effective July 1.

However, the addition of M.D. Anderson to the in-network options does not mean that all cancers are appropriate for treatment there.

“M.D. Anderson typically sees only the unusual or hard-to-treat cases,” said Elaine Britt, director of Rice’s benefits team.

Benefits-eligible employees who need cancer treatment should work with their doctors to determine what is appropriate in their situation.
