Free conference at Rice to focus on businesses’ environmental responsibility

The challenges that businesses face in addressing environmental concerns will be discussed March 14 during a free conference at Rice University.

Titled “Green Pays: Environmental Responsibility in the Business World,” the conference will be held from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the commons at Wiess College on the Rice campus, 6100 Main St. The meeting is open to the public.

Panel discussions will focus on regulation compliance and innovation in a dynamic physical and sociopolitical climate, and on opportunities for environmental stewardship.

Paul Marley II, co-founder and chief operating officer of Renewable Power Development LLC, will present the keynote address at 1:30 p.m.

In addition to Marley, panelists include Debra Marshall, principal adviser for Shell Global Solutions and a member of the operating committee for Rice’s Shell Center for Sustainability; Duane Windsor, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Management at Rice’s Jones Graduate School of Management; Juan Parras, community organizer for the Environmental Justice Advocacy Center; Jim Blackburn, professor in the practice of environmental law at Rice; and Sarah Mason, environmental analyst from the Houston mayor’s office.

In between sessions, attendees can browse booths hosted by the Rice Environmental Club and co-sponsoring clubs: Rice Student Green Building Initiative, Rice for Peace, Rice Student Association and Solar Decathlon.
