Pioneer in environmental justice to speak at Rice March 24

Sociologist and pioneer in environmental justice Robert Bullard will present two lectures at Rice March 24.

He will speak at a colloquium titled “Environmental Justice” at noon in Duncan Hall, Room 3092. Those who plan to attend must RSVP; send an e-mail to cses@rice.edu.

In the evening, Bullard will present “Growing Smarter: Achieving Environmental Justice and Livable Communities.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. in Duncan Hall’s McMurtry Auditorium. Immediately before the lecture, Bullard will be signing copies of his books in the foyer of Duncan Hall. Books will be available for purchase.

Bullard is a professor of sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. He has testified and served as an expert witness in civil right cases and written more than a dozen books on environmental justice, environmental racism, urban land use, facility permitting, community investment, housing, transportation, suburban sprawl and smart growth. His book “Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality” is a standard text in the environmental justice field.

Bullard’s talks are sponsored by the Center for the Study of Environment and Society. The evening talk is also sponsored by the Department of Sociology.
