Rice’s annual powwow celebrates Native American culture
March 28 event is free and open to the public

Through Indian song, dance and costume, participants in Rice University’s 11th annual powwow will compete for prizes March 28 and entertain spectators.

Hosted by the Rice Native American Student Association, the powwow kicks off with a grand entry parade at 1 p.m. on the lawn between the Shepherd School of Music and Baker Hall on the Rice campus.

This Native American social gathering will also feature Indian tacos, crafts and artisan works for sale. The first 100 Rice students who bring their student ID will receive a free T-shirt.

“Powwow time is the Native American people’s way of meeting together to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and making new ones,” said Kendall Toarmina, the vice president of the Rice Native American Student Association.
