Rice Design Alliance offers a tour of small, smart Houston houses
Weekend tour gives glimpse into growing trend

FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

In Houston, where McMansions reign and Hummers patrol, living small is not yet the norm, but it is a growing trend. The 2009 Rice Design Alliance Architecture Tour will highlight innovative examples of small (under 2,000 square feet) but smart houses.

From an intricately designed, energy-efficient, entirely repeatable row house to a creatively retrofitted, unique shipping container, the range of how Houstonians are living small is broad. Included in the lineup is the 99K House and the Rice University Solar Decathlon House, both under 1,500 square feet.
