An episode of the national TV show “The Little Couple” that was filmed at the Rice University Police Department (RUPD) in May is scheduled to air on The Learning Channel at 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.
This half-hour reality series focuses on Houstonians Bill Klein and Jen Arnold, both of whom are under 4 feet tall. Arnold works close to the Rice campus at Texas Children’s Hospital, where she is a neonatologist. The upcoming episode includes scenes of Arnold taking a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class at RUPD.
Sgt. Jim Baylor, RUPD’s training and crime prevention coordinator, and his wife, Sandra, taught the class that was filmed. In addition to being a certified RAD instructor, Sandra is also department coordinator for Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice. The Baylors had to adapt their techniques to accommodate Arnold’s 3-foot, 2-inch stature.
RAD is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. Learn more about the program at http://rupd.rice.edu/programs.cfm?doc_id=10985.
