It’s a bird, it’s a plane

It’s a bird, it’s a plane … it’s a palm?

The sweltering heat might have had people thinking they were seeing a
mirage when palm trees were flying through the air at the new
recreation center this week. But it was no illusion — a 150-ton crane
was lifting and guiding 15 palm trees into the courtyard of the Barbara
and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center. Most of the trees were
planted alongside the 2,400-square-foot recreation pool, creating a
promising oasis of relaxation.

The pool is one of many amenities at the new two-story
facility located near Rice
Memorial Center and scheduled to open in early fall 2009. Other
building highlights include two indoor basketball courts, enhanced
fitness rooms, racquetball and squash courts, 9,000-square-feet of
cardio and weightlifting space, a dance studio, a 50-meter outdoor
competition pool and outdoor basketball courts. More information is available at http://www.rice.edu/gibbswellcenter.
