O-week Outreach Day
New students volunteer throughout Houston

About half of first-year undergraduate students
volunteered last weekend at 28 different community projects throughout
Houston as part of O-Week Outreach Day. Upperclassmen served as
advisers at the project sites as the new students worked with
organizations such as The Forge for Families, Casa de Esperanza and the
Houston Zoo.

At The Forge for Families, which works with Houston’s
Third Ward community, Rice students played with children and coached a
football practice. The aim of The Forge for Families is to enrich the
spiritual, educational, vocational and leadership development of
inner-city families through Christ-centered mentoring.

During
their time at Casa de Esperanza, Rice students worked with children in
crisis due to abuse, neglect or the effects of HIV. Casa de Esperanza
de los Niño — the House of Hope for Children — provides residential,
medical and psychological care according to the needs of each child.

At the Houston Zoo, Rice volunteers built a hammock out of fire hoses for one of the zoo’s new arrivals.
