Symposium offers a chance to reflect on changes in humanities

Today, Rice’s Humanities Research Center hosted a symposium on emerging disciplines and featured seven talks on
new fields of research that span different disciplines, such as music
and neuroscience, cognitive science and performance.

The “Emerging Disciplines” symposium
offered an occasion to reflect on the changing nature and role of
humanities education and the opportunities that cross-school
collaborations open up.

The
symposium was sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Council
on Library and Information Resources and Rice University’s Humanities
Research Center.

The first panel this morning was led by Martin Wiener, Rice’s Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of History and
chair of history, and included talks from:
