Pakistani foreign minister to speak at Baker Institute Oct. 5

Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi will deliver an address Oct. 5 at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy titled “Transitions in Pakistan-U.S. Relations.”

Since Qureshi became foreign minister in March 2008, Pakistan has been in the international headlines. He backs improved relations with Pakistan’s neighbor India and has explained Pakistan’s positions on the war in Afghanistan and its domestic conflict to the world.

Edward Djerejian, founding director of the Baker Institute, and Nick Lampson, former U.S. representative from Texas, will deliver introductory remarks.

Before becoming foreign minister, Qureshi served as president of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Punjab. A veteran politician, he has contested and won local, provincial and national elections from his home constituency in Multan.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Baker Hall’s Doré Commons. Breakfast will be offered beforehand.
