ADVANCE to present research on women’s progress
The results of more than three years of work to promote women in academic science and engineering careers at Rice University will be presented Nov. 4 at a showcase on gender issues in academia sponsored by ADVANCE.
Seven 10-minute presentations by individual researchers or teams will be delivered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Keck Hall, Room 102. Topics include predictors of commitment and success among undergraduate science, engineering, technology and mathematics majors, gender differences in graduate school experiences, high-stakes tests, letters of recommendation, academic turnover, an assessment of gender discrimination in ecology and the underrepresentation of women in the Brown Teaching Awards.
A poster session from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brochstein Pavilion will feature research results, with the investigators available to answer questions. In the week that follows, posters will be on display in the pavilion and in the lobbies of the Fondren Library, Keck Hall, Herman Brown Hall, Duncan Hall, the Humanities Building and Sewall Hall.
”We hope and believe this research will be of interest to everyone at Rice — administrators, faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students, whether male or female,” said Mikki Hebl, a Rice associate professor of psychology and management and co-principal investigator on the ADVANCE grant. “Everyone is welcome to come learn about the research.”
Established in 2006 on a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation, ADVANCE has conducted social science research while working to strengthen the gender-neutral climate at Rice.
The sessions are free and open to all. For information, visit http://cohesion.rice.edu/centersandinst/advance/, or contact Hebl at hebl@rice.edu or Jan Rinehart, executive director of ADVANCE, at Jan.Rinehart@rice.edu.
