Russian ambassador to US will speak at Baker Institute Dec. 2

Sergey Kislyak, the ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States, will speak on “The Current State of Russian-U.S. Relations” Dec. 2 at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.

Kislyak began his career at the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union in 1977. He was second secretary of the Permanent Mission of the USSR to the United Nations in New York from 1981 to 1985, when he became first secretary and counselor of the Embassy of the USSR in the United States until 1989.

Kislyak later served as director of the Department of International Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the Foreign Ministry of Russia (1993-1995) and director of the Department of Security Affairs and Disarmament of the Foreign Ministry of Russia (1995-1998). From 1998 to 2003, he was ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Belgium, as well as permanent representative of Russia to NATO in Brussels.

Kislyak was deputy minister of foreign affairs from 2003 to 2008 and holds a diplomatic rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. He arrived in Washington as ambassador to the U.S. in September 2008.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Baker Hall’s Doré Commons.
