FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

Faculty and staff can join the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center for the remainder of the academic year and summer at prorated costs.

Faculty and staff can join the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation
and Wellness Center for the remainder of the academic year and summer at prorated costs.

“With payroll deduction, the prorated fee is only $12 per pay period,” said Tina Villard, director of the rec center. “And it’s very simple to join and complete payroll deduction online through your Esther account, so you don’t have to come to the recreation center office to do it. Just log in to your Esther account and scroll down to the Recreation Center Enrollment link at the bottom.”

Members have access to the rec center’s two heated pools, four racquetball courts, two squash courts, four basketball courts (two of which are indoors), weight/cardio room and multipurpose activity court for indoor soccer, floor hockey, basketball and volleyball.

The facility also has a personal training and fitness assessment center and space for group fitness and dance classes, including a Morning Boot Camp session on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from March 8 through April 16, a Middle Eastern belly dancing class that meets on Monday nights March 8-29, and private lessons in social and ballroom dancing. The center charges a fee for classes and private sessions to help cover instructors’ salaries, but some fitness classes are free to members.

Members have access to the rec center’s new weight/cardio room.

Members can also sign up for activities partially subsidized by the Outdoor Adventure Center, such as the March 13-14 rock-climbing trip to Reimer’s Ranch near Austin.

The rec center provides free towels and day lockers in the locker rooms and throughout the facility. Permanent lockers are available for rent.

A $5 day pass is available to faculty, staff and students who want to try out the rec center before buying a membership.
