Rice partnership turns local students into authors this summer
Writers in the Schools and Rice creative writing workshops inspire local students

The publishing world just got an infusion of young talent, thanks to Rice University and Writers in the Schools (WITS) summer creative writing workshops, which turned nearly 800 K-12 students from across Houston into published authors in three weeks.

The workshops are a 20-year-old collaborative project between WITS and Rice’s Center for Education that began as a way to bridge the gap between teaching basic writing skills and applying writing as an art form. The interconnectedness of art and writing was showcased this year on campus when a group of students came to Rice to experience its art, architecture and environment.
“Being at Rice greatly enhanced the program,” said Raina Bora, a local high schooler and aspiring author. “I did not expect to experience the art galleries and really enjoyed them, due to the thought-provoking, abstract nature of the art.”
