2 former US envoys to UN to debate Oct. 5 at Rice’s Baker Institute

Two former U.S. permanent representatives to the United Nations will present differing viewpoints on international law and the role of the United States in world affairs Oct. 5 at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.

Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. from 1997 to 1998 during the administration of Bill Clinton. John Bolton, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, was U.S. ambassador to the U.N. from 2005 to 2006 during the administration of George W. Bush. The topic of their discussion will be “The Rule of Law in World Affairs.” Fox News correspondent Eric Shawn will moderate.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Baker Hall’s Doré Commons.
The discussion is expected to cover how nations settle disputes among themselves and the appropriate role of international organizations like the United Nations in conflict resolution.
Edward Djerejian, founding director of the Baker Institute, and Lawrence Sager, dean of the University of Texas School of Law, will deliver welcoming remarks and introductions.
The event is the first in a series organized by the Baker Institute with the University of Texas School of Law under the auspices of the James A. Baker III Chair in the Rule of Law in World Affairs at UT Law.
