New Hampshire senator to discuss national debt Oct. 25 at Baker Institute lecture

U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg will discuss “Debt and Deficit: Long-term Fiscal Issues” Oct. 25 at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.

Gregg, R-N.H., is the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. He is a national leader on fiscal policy, a well-known budget expert and a respected voice on health care, economic and financial regulatory issues.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Baker Hall’s Kelly International Conference Facility.

In March, President Barack Obama appointed Gregg to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. The bipartisan commission is responsible for developing recommendations this year that will help balance the budget and achieve fiscal sustainability in the long term.

Gregg played a major role as a chief negotiator of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. He was the lead sponsor of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 and, along with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., co-authored the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, Gregg also served as one of the principal negotiators working to modernize the country’s financial regulatory system. His expertise on banking issues and derivatives reform positioned him as a pivotal voice in the debate on regulatory reform. He is also the ranking member of the appropriations subcommittee that is responsible for funding the State Department and international activities of the government.

Gregg received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and his L.L.M. in tax law and J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
