Scholars, artists to discuss quilts as the patchwork soul of women Nov. 5
Quilt exhibition on view at Rice Media Center
FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
Quilts have long been a way for women to creatively communicate their spiritual and personal experiences. On Nov. 5, leading scholars and practitioners will gather at Rice to discuss the art of quilting as part of the “Hearts, Hands & Heritage: The Patchwork of the Soul of Women” exhibition.
A reception and panel discussion will be at 6 p.m. in the Rice Media Center. Among the speakers at the panel discussion will be Marcia Brennan, Rice associate professor of art history; Lauren Cross, writer, activist and interdisciplinary artist; Jill Rimes, founder of SunFlower Quilts; and Bob Rugierio, director of publications and public information of Quilts Inc.
The exhibition, which is currently on display at the Rice Media Center through Nov. 19, features a collection of powerful works of art. Produced and curated by Rice graduate student Aundrea Matthews, the exhibition aims to illustrate a broad range of artistic techniques and inspirations, shed light on the lives and experiences of quilt makers, and examine the role women have played in education, politics, religion, the arts, business, the family and much more.
The event is sponsored by Houston Enriches Rice Education and co-sponsored by the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts. For more information, visit www.here.rice.edu/heartshandsheritage/.
