Former US Census director available to discuss new census data for Texas
Rice sociologist can comment on redistricting, population growth, diversity
Tomorrow the U.S. Census Bureau is expected to release more data from the 2010 census, including detailed population figures for Texas cities and counties that will serve as the basis for congressional redistricting. The data will also provide a first look at population counts for small areas and the racial and ethnic makeup of Texas.
Steve Murdock, Rice University sociologist and former director of the U.S. Census Bureau, can discuss census results and comment on which parts of the state are growing, redistricting, the effects of diversity, the growth and decline of racial and ethnic populations, Texas population growth and other census topics.
Prior to serving as U.S. Census director during 2008-2009, Murdock was the first official state demographer of Texas and headed the Texas State Data Center and Texas Population Estimates and Projections programs for more than 25 years. He is now the Allyn R. and Gladys M. Cline Professor of Sociology at Rice.
