Committee seeks input on student priorities for radio
sale proceeds

The Asset Liquidation Funds Appropriations (ALFA) Committee
launched a campaign this week to gather ideas from Rice students about how funds
from the pending sale of the KTRU broadcast tower, license and frequency can be
used to benefit the entire campus. The recommendations will be presented to Rice President David Leebron later in the spring.

Organized by the Student Association and Graduate Student
Association at Leebron’s request, the committee includes four
undergraduate students, three graduate students and three members of the university
administration. An online form for submitting proposals is being set up at http://alfa.rice.edu and a survey will be
e-mailed to all undergraduate and graduate students. Students can also send
ideas to alfa@rice.edu. Suggestions and
proposals must be submitted by Feb. 25.
“We want every student to have a say in how these funds
are spent,” said Selim Sheikh, president of the Student Association (SA).
“This is a way for current students to leave a lasting legacy.”
After expenses and other allocations, about $6 million will
be available from the sale, which is pending before the Federal Communications
Commission. Guidelines for the proposals call for devoting the majority of
funds to an endowment and a smaller portion for onetime projects and programs
that benefit all undergraduate and graduate students.
Representatives from the ALFA committee plan to go to all
college cabinets to gather input, host lunches in the colleges’ private dining
rooms and hold various forums, Sheikh said. Other opportunities to share input
