Rice Religious Studies students to meet at downtown church tonight
‘Religion and Hip Hop’ class will discuss whether rap should be in church

Rice University students in a class titled ”Religion and Hip-Hop Culture” will attend a panel discussion tonight at St. John’s United Methodist Church.

The participants will discuss whether rap music has a place in the church.

‘Religion and Hip-Hop Culture’ is co-taught by Anthony Pinn, the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities and professor of religious studies, and Houston-based rapper Bernard Freeman, better known as Bun B. The class has generated widespread interest at Rice and beyond.

Students from Texas Southern University and the University of Houston will also take part in the discussion.

The event is sponsored by the Houston Enriches Rice Education (H.E.R.E.) project and is a special session of the Religion and Hip-Hop Culture class. The discussion begins at 7 p.m.

St. John’s United Methodist Church is located at 2019 Crawford St. (at Gray Street), just south of downtown Houston.
