More than 40 teams of undergraduate and graduate students competed Wednesday at Rice Memorial Center in the 2011 Rice University Engineering Competition. The annual event was held in celebration of National Engineers Week and sponsored by the Rice Global Engineering & Construction Forum, the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Fluor Corp. The contest challenges students to solve an engineering problem using everyday materials like rubber bands, tape and paper. This year, teams were faced with a construction project: Build something that can lift a weight (rubber eraser) 25-35 centimeters within 5-7 seconds. Each team was given a budget and list of materials they could purchase, and the winning team was chosen based on its ability to complete the task on time and under budget. |
