Lending a helping hand

Lending a helping hand

Every Wednesday morning, a group of Rice students meets outside Lovett
College. They’re not gathering to study or practice playing a sport or
an instrument. The students have their minds set to more charitable
endeavors – cooking and serving food to hundreds of Houston’s homeless.

At
7:10 a.m. the group treks over to Palmer Episcopal Church, one of
Rice’s neighbors located just across Main Street. There they work at the
church’s Way Station, serving food to more than 300 homeless and hungry
that have depended on the church for a hot meal since 1991.

Wednesdays
are casserole day at the Way Station, and the students spend their time
there mixing ingredients, straining canned fruit, cooking grits,
prepping desserts and getting other staples – like peanut butter and
jelly – ready for mealtime. When that work is finished, students start
handing out plates of food to the hungry souls that line up around the
building.
