Baker Institute founding director available to discuss latest developments in Middle East
The United Nations Security Council voted Thursday evening to authorize military intervention in Libya, and the Libyan government responded by declaring an immediate cease-fire in its fight against rebels. Edward P. Djerejian, the founding director of Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, is available to comment on this and other developments in the volatile region.
The toppling of the governments of Tunisia and Egypt, the ongoing unrest in Yemen and Bahrain and the strife in Libya are all symptoms of the profound changes consuming the Arab world.
“The popular uprisings in the Middle East represent a transformational change in the political landscape of the region that pose significant challenges and opportunities for U.S. policymakers,” Djerejian said.
Djerejian, who served as U.S. ambassador to Syria and Israel and assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, is the author of the book “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador’s Journey Through the Middle East.”
