Rice and UTSA football to celebrate Rice centennial
Game set for Oct. 13, 2012
FROM RICE ATHLETICS
Rice and the University of Texas-San Antonio have agreed to a home game and home football series that will commence Oct. 13, 2012, when the UT Roadrunners visit Rice Stadium to provide the opposition as part of Rice University’s Centennial Celebration and homecoming. The return game between the two schools will be played in San Antonio in 2013.
“Any compilation of Rice’s athletics history would not be possible without an acknowledgment of the contributions from hundreds of student-athletes from the San Antonio area,” said Rick Greenspan, director of Rice athletics. “The pairing of these two schools on the day we will celebrate both homecoming and the Rice centennial is an ideal way to recognize that relationship.”
The inaugural game between the Owls and Roadrunners is one of many featured events during the five-day Rice centennial commemoration. In addition to Rice’s traditional homecoming and reunion activities, the celebration will include an academic procession and keynote address, a statue dedication, the Centennial Lecture Series, musical performances, art and architecture tours, exhibits, receptions and parties.
The Roadrunners will open their first season of football this fall as an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision independent. The University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously approved UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan Dec. 18, 2008; the plan granted the university permission to add a football program. UTSA will join the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 and will become full-fledged members of the Football Bowl Subdivision by 2014.
