Pedro Alvarez, the George R. Brown Professor of Engineering and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named a Water Environment Federation (WEF) Fellow for his professional achievements. He is one of 17 fellows in the initial class of honorees. The WEF is a not-for-profit technical and educational organization with 36,000 members. The organization works to preserve and enhance the global water environment.
The Houston Chapter of the International Facility Management Association visited the Rice campus June 14. Richard Johnson, director of sustainability; Susann Glenn, manager of communications for Facilities, Engineering and Planning (FE&P); Erik Knezevich, project manager in FE&P; and Russell Price, assistant vice president for FE&P, hosted a tour of Rice’s Brockman Hall for Physics, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified building, and gave an overview of university’s sustainability program. The presentation covered the development of Rice’s sustainability program, its evolution, insights and lessons learned on the 10 LEED buildings at Rice, as well as energy conservation techniques and experimental technologies.
Barbara White Bryson, associate vice president for Facilities, Engineering and Planning, presented her book, “The Owner’s Dilemma,” and discussed the owner’s role in the design and construction industry at the June 16 Authors in Architecture, a collaboration between the Houston Public Library Downtown and the Architecture Center Houston.
