Rice University finance experts available to comment on recent economic uncertainty
Is the United States headed for a double-dip recession? Rice University experts Gustavo Grullon, professor of finance, and Jill Foote, senior lecturer in finance, are available to respond to this question and others regarding the recent economic insecurity.
According to Grullon, the U.S. economy is experiencing a high level of uncertainty, thanks in part to political conflicts in Washington, high unemployment rate and lack of economic growth. ”These factors have significantly increased the fear of a double-dip recession,” Grullon said. ”Unfortunately, this fear could become a self-fulfilling prophecy as companies stop investing and hiring, and consumers cut down on their spending. The recent events in the financial markets seem to reflect this fear.”
”The market rout was exacerbated by S&P downgrading the U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA+, the first time in U.S. history,” Foote said. ”Ironically, the treasury markets have benefited from a flight to quality, demonstrating that the world continues to believe in the U.S. as an investment safe haven. Many stocks are now extremely cheap – a great buying opportunity – as long as the U.S. does not enter a double-dip recession.”
