Rice University expert available to comment on massacre that killed 52 in Monterrey, Mexico

Rice University political scientist Mark Jones is available to speak about the attack on a casino in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey Thursday that killed at least 52 people. Masked gunmen set the building on fire, trapping dozens of patrons inside.

“This attack is a setback for the administration of President Felipe Calderon,” Jones said. “The death of innocent civilians cuts into public support for the government’s efforts to fight organized crime.”

Jones is Rice’s Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American Studies, professor and chair of political science and fellow in political science at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. He can conduct the interview in English or Spanish and may be reached at or franz.brotzen@rice.edu 713-348-6775.
