ALFA
Committee reports progress on use of KTRU tower sale proceeds
FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
The inaugural Welcome Back
Concert Aug. 20 featuring Three 6 Mafia was made possible, in part, by funds
from the sale of the KTRU tower and license. It was just one of several
proposals from the Asset Liquidation Funds Appropriation (ALFA) Committee that
were approved by President David Leebron last month.
The ALFA Committee,
organized by the Student Association (SA) and Graduate Student Association
(GSA) at Leebron’s request, solicited student ideas and proposals for how to
spend $6 million from the tower and license sale to benefit students and the
campus.
During the summer, the
committee added some members to replace students who graduated in May, along with
some administration representatives. The group met several times to research
the cost and feasibility of their proposals and then submitted recommendations
to Leebron for funding approval.
At the top of the list was
$25,000 for the Welcome Back Concert, which was expedited in order to allow the
Rice Program Council to organize it in time for the start of the school year.
The ALFA money was supplemented by funding from the president’s office, the
dean of undergraduates, the program council, GSA, O-Week and KTRU.
Several onetime grants
were approved, including grants for a new emergency-response vehicle and a
cardiac monitor for Rice Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and lighting of
intramural fields. Also approved were four endowments (see box), which must
still be approved at the September meeting of the Rice Board of Trustees.
