October architecture symposium

kicks off this week with landscape architect

Judgment will be the focus of an all-day symposium at the Rice School of Architecture Oct. 13, when an
international gathering of architects and academics will discuss the criteria
for making architectural decisions or judgments.

The event is free and open to the public and is part of the 2011-2012
Kennon Symposium Series.
Judgment, Part 1,
will take the form of back-to-back “conversations” at the RSA’s
Farish Gallery in Anderson Hall.
“There are no obvious criteria for making architectural decisions
today, either as a designer or as a critic,” said Sarah Whiting, RSA dean and the William Ward
Watkin Professor of Architecture. “There is no obvious, dominant style
or dominant paradigms. So we’re asking, How do we put the
criteria for choices in architecture on the table for everyone to discuss, and
can those criteria start to emerge from schools of architecture? They’re not
emerging from the profession.”
