Rice remembers 9/11

This weekend Rice University will host a number of events to remember those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Rice Memorial Chapel bells will ring 10 times to mark the moment of each plane crash. All times are CDT.

7:46 a.m. – Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

8:03 a.m. – Flight 175 crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center.

8:37 a.m. – Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

9:03 a.m. – Flight 93 crashes in Somerset County, Penn.

At noon, all governments, businesses, houses of worship, railways, fire and police departments and others are called on to ring bells and sound sirens as the country observes a moment of remembrance. Rice is encouraging students, faculty and staff to join in this minute of reflection.

At 4 p.m., the Rice Chorale will perform in the Shepherd School of Music’s Stude Concert Hall. Director of Choral Ensembles and Professor of Music Thomas Jaber will lead a time of reflection and dedication as he directs the chorale’s performance of Mozart’s “Requiem.”

That evening the Rice community will come together at 8 p.m. for a memorial vigil on Rice’s Central Quad. The event is open to all faith and non-faith groups and will include a reading of Tony Kushner’s “A Prayer for New York” and a performance of the national anthem.
