Collaborative contemporary art exhibit opens at Rice’s student-run Matchbox Gallery Sept. 29
“Repurposed,” a collaborative exhibit of two works by Rice University students using recycled materials and images will open Sept. 29 at the Matchbox Gallery on the Rice campus.
The Matchbox Gallery, a student-run space for contemporary art, is located in Sewall Hall, Room 258. The opening reception will begin at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, and music will be provided by KTRU.
“Reconstructed Used Furniture” by Rice Senior Dolly Li is the latest in a series of used-furniture pieces made of recycled materials collected from students and recycling areas around the Rice campus. Visitors are encouraged to lie down on the piece to experience the collaborative ceiling and floor installations.
“Suspended” by Rice Senior Elliott SoRelle is a reinvention of images as objects recycled from previous photographic work. All objects have deliberately been taken out of their original contexts and joined together to explore new emergent relations and dynamics. “Suspended” seeks to create context from the exhibition space and from the objects themselves.
The cooperation of “Suspended” with “Reconstructed Used Furniture” invites the audience to engage with a conventional space in a nonconventional way, through vertical rather than horizontal exploration.
“Repurposed” will be on display through Oct. 27, but will be open only by appointment after the launch events. For more, contact mtchbxgallery@gmail.com
