When Venezuelans go to the polls next October, President Hugo Chávez is expected to seek a third term. Three Venezuelan scholars will discuss the elections from the standpoint of economics, politics and international relations at a Nov. 17 panel discussion at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.
Who:
- Francisco Monaldi, director of the Center for Energy and the Environment at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración, in Caracas, Venezuela, will speak on “Economic Aspects of Venezuela’s Oil-based Economy.”
- José Enrique Molina, professor of political science at Zulia University in Maracaibo, Venezuela, will speak on “Political Scenarios.”
- Carlos Romero, professor emeritus of international relations and foreign policy at the Universidad Central de Venezuela’s Institute of Political Studies, will speak on “Venezuela’s Role in the International Community.”
- Mark Jones, the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American Studies, professor and chair of political science at Rice and fellow in political science at the Baker Institute, will moderate the discussion.

The panel discussion is part of the Baker Institute Latin America Initiative’s Vecinos Lecture Series.
